The Whitemarsh Community Art Center seeks to provide an atmosphere of exploration and discovery for its diverse audience, serving adults and children with varied levels of skills and experience. Our classes promote an understanding of hand-made crafts (i.e. ceramics, beading, papermaking, knitting, etc.) and fine arts (i.e. painting, drawing, and printmaking) for the cultural enrichment of the community. Programs are oriented toward assisting people of all ages to experience their innate capacities for creativity and self-expression. The Art Center has over 200 active members. During our 2005-2006 season, we provided over 83 classes, in which over 650 students were enrolled. The teaching faculty consists of both degreed and working artisans who are committed to sharing their knowledge and experience with students. Our teachers love the arts and the Art Center. Many of them have been teaching here for 10-20 years. In addition to our education program, the WCAC promotes and shares the arts with the entire community in special ways. Each spring, the Art Center sponsors an “Art in the Park” festival. At this event, children come from all over the township to create crafts. We also have an open house during this event where our students and faculty exhibit their work. During the summer, we offer a 4 week Art Camp for children in grades K though 5. This program allows children to explore a variety of arts and crafts experiences, including clay, painting, papermaking and collage. Our winter program includes the holiday Craft Market, at which the general public can purchase affordable crafts and gifts. Local artists especially appreciate the chance to exhibit and sell their works. Our “Valentine Tea” is a unique culinary affair that brings members and friends together to share a warm and spirited afternoon in a classically Victorian setting. We run outreach programs with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Montgomery County, the Colonial School District, and local churches & synagogues. In addition, we provide approximately 20 art scholarships for students of the Colonial School District. Other special programs include bus trips to art galleries, craft shows, and museums in New York and Baltimore and a “Celebrating Cinema” film series in association with the Ambler Theater. |
