Additional Weeks added to Summer Camp

     Two additional weeks have been added to the 2010 Summer Camp schedule.  This year camp will begin the week of June 14th and will now go until the second week of August.  This will allow parents greater flexibility to schedule their children’s activities around vacations and other summer activities.

Winter Craft Market proves successful

     In spite of a little snow and a new format, the 2009 Whitemarsh Art Center Winter Craft Market was a resounding success.  Vendors did very well overall and the art center was pleased with the flexibility of this year’s new format.  Although the economy and the weather played a part in the final outcome of the event, the market exceeded most expectations.

Art Center Honored by Whitemarsh Township

     The Board of Supervisors of Whitemarsh Township issued a resolution at its regularly scheduled board meeting honoring the Whitemarsh Art Center on the occasion of its 45th anniversary.  The resolution was presented to Susan Wasserman, the art center’s president, by Sara Erlbaum, Chair of the Whitemarsh Township Board of Supervisors.

Applications for Art Installations being Accepted

     A request for proposals has been sent out to area artists for the creation and installation of large outdoor art pieces on the grounds of the art center at Cedar Grove Park.  The art center is expected to select as many as three projects to be installed during 2009 and 2010.

New Children’s Program Coordinator Named

     The Whitemarsh Art Center is pleased to announce the addition of Kara Spalding to our staff.  Kara will be assuming the position of Children’s Program Coordinator in mid-August.  According to Chris Dwyer, the art center’s executive director, “Kara comes to the art center with a decade of teaching experience, as well as years of management and project coordination.  We look forward to having her on our team and wish her great success! “

Children’s Art Camp a great success

“That was fun,” was recently overheard from a little camper as she ran to meet her mother at the end of her first week at camp.   She, along with dozens of other children are participating in the Whitemarsh Art Center’s summer art camp.  “Despite the difficult economy camp has had nearly full enrollment,” said Kitty Strzelecki Whitemarsh’s office administrator.  She went on to ask, “Why not with camp being so much fun?”

Raku Sculpture takes “First Place” in exhibition

Brett Thomas took “First Place” for his raku sculpture titled “Me & You” in this year’s members exhibition.  Ann Peters’ “Cow” oil painting took “Second Place” and Art Braitman’s “Lily” photograph placed “Third.”  Paul Taglianetti’s ceramic basket entitled “Weaving” was awarded “People’s Choice.”  Congratulations to the winners and all who participated.

Art Center ready for first annual Members’ Exhibition

     “All is ready for the first annual members’ exhibition,” said Claire Perles, Exhibition Chair and member of the art center board of directors.  She went on to say, “It’s going to be an awesome show.”  The center expects a rather large turnout for the opening reception on Friday, May 29th from 7:00-9:00pm.  With a membership of close to two hundred artists the variety of work is likely to be outstanding.

Whitemarsh Township Day a great success for the art center

     The community art project hosted by the Whitemarsh Art Center at this year’s Whitemarsh Township Day proved to be a hit with both adults and children alike.  Participants hand-painted small recycled screen panels that will be assembled into a large community quilt.  The art project is expected to be on display at various locations throughout the township and then installed permanently at the art center in Cedar Grove Park in the fall of 2009.

Art Center Celebrates 45th Anniversary

     The Whitemarsh Art Center celebrated its four and half decade milestone with a cocktail reception at the home of Ann and Brian Peters.  The event gave guests an opportunity to reminisce while looking over dozens of newspaper articles and photos from the center’s forty-five year history.

Founders and Supporters Honored at 45th Celebration

     Julia Cottrel, Dorothy Nofer and Dena Shea were presented with the “Founder’s Award” at the art center’s 45th anniversary celebration.  These three women who not only founded the center but were instrumental in making it flourish for its first three decades.   Ann Bucci, Marilyn Miller and Joanne Scoles were also recognized with “The President’s Award” for their longstanding support.
