Chantalle Saucier

My work is inspired by nature and my everyday surroundings. I strive to capture the magic in the mundane and share it with the viewer. I mainly paint in acrylic but also dabble in ceramics. While I work in a field that is unrelated to art, I have been painting since high school during my free time. I hadn't taken any art courses since then, until I learned about the Whitemarsh Arts Center. I am currently taking painting and pottery classes with Stefanie and Charlotte, and I couldn't recommend them or the art center more!

I worked for 41 years as an architect because I enjoy constructing things and largely because I loved to draw, with or without a straight edge. Drawing is a way of thinking about what one sees or creates. As the practise of my chosen profession became more computerized, I became interested in the arts of drawing and painting as ends in themselves. This fulfills a need I have for direct involvement with the art being produced. I have been painting now for about 20 years, first in watercolor and now in oils.

Taking virtual pottery classes with Charlotte has been a joy and an eye-opener. We were taught so much. When we were shown how to "sculpt" using super thin clay, I was hooked. This piece expresses the lyrical fluidity of the clay and can be used for real flowers as well. Whitemarsh Art Center opened a brand new window for me. Enjoy.

Molly Yates Levy

I’ve been studying ceramics on and off at Whitemarsh Art Center since 2005. I was intrigued with the similarity between slip trailing and cake decorating techniques but found slip thick enough to use with a pastry bag to be too rough for functional pieces. One day my mother commented that she couldn’t find a lemon juicer that did a good job. Suddenly, it clicked that a juicer would be the perfect application for the rough slip. The dotted finish is influenced by Matthew Schiemann.

I like simplicity - of composition, of color, of line. Nature is so intricate, but I'm drawn to its most basic parts: the foam at the edge of a wave, the green of a particular leaf, an expanse of blue sky with nothing but the subtlest gradation of color. It helps, of course, to know that it's all part of a great, complex, and interwoven whole. Leaning into the little bits reminds me that the smallest among us contain multitudes, and that we're all a part of everything. | JeanninePowers.com

I started painting 2 years ago when I joined Stefanie Lieberman's Wednesday classes. I like painting different subject matters and learning new techniques. Each time I paint something new, I hold my breath and see if it will actually work out. I am just beginning my artistic journey and I am curious to see where it will take me.
